What is ESOS?

The Energy Savings Opportunity Scheme (ESOS) is an EU directive (adopted into UK Law) that mandates large businesses or enterprises to conduct regular energy audits. The audits are required to identify energy and carbon saving opportunities specific to each business participating.

Phase II for ESOS is now underway with organisations required to notify the Environment Agency of their compliance by 5 December 2019.

Large UK enterprises meeting either of the following criteria must comply:

  • Employs 250 or more people, or,
  • Has an annual turnover in excess of 50 million euro (£38,937,777*), and an annual balance sheet total in excess of 43 million euro (£33,486,489*)

*These figures are estimates only and are subject to currency fluctuations.
